Saint Peter's church and the "Vlaamse Primitieven", Leuven

Next to the incredibly beautiful town hall, you find the oldest parish church in Leuven. The parish was founded during the 10th century. The original church building was erected in Romanesque style but rebuilt after several devastations with white sandstone in the Gothic style. This started around the year 1400. The choir of the church was built on two levels and is the most striking element of the church. It was designed by Sulpicus van Vorst and has a circle of chapels.

Leuven had very ambitious plans and wanted a church with three high towers. The front scene should have displayed three towers, two of 120 meter high and in the middle one of 150 meter (according to some even 170m). These towers could not be completed because of unstable soil. After several collapses, the plans were put to a stop.

The choir of St. Peter's holds true treasures. Besides a collection of religious silverware it is also the proud custodian of 3 famous paintings of the "Flemish Primitives". The "Flemish Primitives" are the most important painters of the 15th and 16th century from The Netherlands and Belgium. They are also sometimes mentioned as painters of the "Northern Renaissance".

The first painting is "The Edelheeretripiek" by Rogier van der Weyden. This triptych depicts a contemporary view of the deposition. Rogier van der Weyden is the most influential painter of the Netherlands from the 15th century. Next to Jan van Eyck probably the most important painter of the Netherlands.

The triptych, "Altarpiece of the Holy Sacrament" with in the middle of "The Last Supper" and the triptych, "The torture of Saint Erasmus" were made by Dirk Bouts in the 15th century. Dirk Bouts was a Dutch painter from Haarlem and died in Leuven in 1475. For those interested in architecture, religion, art or history this church is certainly worth a visit.
