Renovations on the Saint Gummarus church, Lier

The Saint Gummarus church in Lier is in full renovation. The church dates from 1625 and it took the town more 247 years of construction works before it was finished. The current renovations will not take that long but most be very expensive. All stained glass is being removed and will be created again. The facades as you see on the third picture will become white again. The difference compare to the lower black part is enormous. This Gothic church should be completely renovated in November 2011. Saint Gummarus was a knight who founded the town of Lier during the 7th century. In the church you find his statue and a high quality painting from Frans Francken II (1627) where Saint Gummarus performs a miracle. He ties his belt around a dead tree and it comes to live again. The other paintings in the church are also praiseworthy. The church is not only nice to be visited because of the inside treasures but also the elders working here were friendly and willing to answer all your questions. Thanks.

Hartelijk bedankt..
