Centuries of diverse war cultures at Castle Santa Barbara, Alicante

Castle Santa Barbara received its name in the 13th century when it returned into Spanish hands. From the 7th century, the Muslim invaders built an Alcazabar fortress on top of the 166m mountain. When it was returned in to the Spaniards it became a military defense castle. War seemed to dominate the centuries.

In the modern era of the 20th century, the castle was a prison. You could say, a cell with a view. Today it is a museum and probably the most popular attraction of Alicante.

We did the hike in both directions and enjoyed the climb. The views are amazing and the castle is fantastic. On the top you see the port and a 360 degrees view of the city.
